Extinction Rebellion Brighton Calls On Locals To Help Sound Climate Alarm At Labour Party Conference

Extinction Rebellion Brighton is organising a seafront march at this year's Labour Party Conference – and is urging local people to take part.

At 10am on Sunday 22nd September, marchers are meeting at the Peace Statue on Hove Lawns.

They will then go along the seafront to the Brighton Centre – where the conference is being held – to deliver a message to the government's opposition that urgent action is needed in the face of the climate and ecological emergency humanity faces.

The march will then move onto the Old Steine, where Extinction Rebellion will create a pop-up space so that politicians, other activists and passers-by can find out more about the rapidly-growing global climate movement.

Over the following few days, until the conference ends on 25th September, there will be free talks about the next Worldwide Rebellion, starting on 7th October, and how to get involved – as well as a people's climate assembly, creative art activities and films.

Claudia Fisher says:

"We want the Labour Party to make the climate crisis the number one concern at this conference.

"Our current government has set us on course for decarbonisation for 2050, but that is suicidal.

"All the science is telling us that we must become carbon neutral as soon as we can, because the ecosystem on which all life on Earth depends is collapsing.

"The Amazon, the lungs of the Earth, is burning. Even the Arctic is on fire.

"When David Attenborough is saying  the collapse of civilization is on the horizon, why are politicians still not listening?

"All our children are counting on politicians taking much, much bolder action on climate.

"This is why we are asking all our neighbours and friends in Brighton and Hove to come along on the 22nd – to help us demand that the Labour Party set a target of net zero carbon by 2025.

"In true Extinction Rebellion style, this march – and subsequent action – will be peaceful, family-friendly, colourful and fun."

Local residents who would like to find out more, can sign up to the event on Facebook here. Alternatively they can email xr_brightonactions@protonmail.com - or they can simply turn up at 10am on the 22nd September 2019 at the Peace Statue.
