Fly Like An Eagle: Kelly Jones On The Unlikely Return Of Stereophonics Ahead Of Live Show @ The Brighton Centre

"Our last gig of the world tour was September 2018, in Brooklyn - I was done, had written no songs, nothing new, I thought I felt like quitting for a while," says Stereophonics frontman, Kelly Jones.

"Then, by November I had a load of songs that just came through me - lyrics just filling up pages, no crossings out, complete songs formed. 

"They became a very open and, to be honest, a bunch of really vulnerable songs about things I hadn't quite worked out for myself; the songs began to inform me, how I was feeling. 

"I didn't know or really mind if others wanted to hear them or like them, I just needed to get them out of me. 

"So, when it came to an album, I wanted to just capture honest performances of them and we recorded the album in just 11 days." 


The upshot of the intense period of writing see Stereophonics return with Fly Like An Eagle. The song is the first to be unveiled from forthcoming album Kind.

Kelly Jones adds:

"'Fly like an Eagle' was one of the first I wrote and I feel it covers a lot of ground on the record and the line came, 'Wanna fly like an eagle, and dare to be reborn'  - not in a religious sense, but it's about changing and growth, and learning not relying on the comfort zones of your life. 

"And as people we all morph into new and different versions of ourselves. We don't have to stay the same."

The accompanying video, an emotionally affecting coming-of-age tale, was shot by Charlotte Regan and stars Charlie Creed-Miles (Peaky Blinders). 

Recorded in just eleven days at The Distillery, Wiltshire, Kind was co-produced by Kelly Jones and George Drakoulias (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Screaming Trees, Primal Scream). 

The recording sessions used minimal studio techniques, overdubs or technology.

The South Downs National Park photo competition is now open, with a first prize of £250 on offer to the amateur or professional photographer who best captures this year's theme of 'My tranquil haven'.

"In rock music, it's really easy to talk about partying and shagging girls and all that kind of stuff," says Skunk Anansie vocalist Skin. "But for us, what we were singing about had to be deeper, it had to mean something. We had to talk about our experiences and what we were going through."

Barely a year since their debut album Dogrel, Dublin's Fontaines D.C. are set to return with A Hero's Death.

The Rec Rooms is an independent music and comedy venue in Horsham, West Sussex, which was opened by three locals just over eighteen months ago. 

This Saturday, 30th May, Together Co, the Brighton & Hove based charity that exists to end loneliness, is hosting a virtual music festival that will see more than twenty bands perform for free to raise money to help the most vulnerable and isolated.  

Following Brighton Festival's digital programme during lockdown, poet and author Lemn Sissay MBE has confirmed he will return as guest director in 2021.
